Sassafras Canteen, Paddington

Inspired by food greats Mike McEnearney from Kitchen by Mike in Sydney and Yotam Ottolenghi in London, Paddington's Sassafrass has emerged with a new look and a new Monday to Friday lunch menu.

Say hello to Sassafras Canteen and a changing daily menu where you order from what you can see at the counter.  From 11.30am with breakfast a pleasant memory, the display counter is gradually covered with just made salads, roast meat and fish, a daily pizza, tartine and savoury tart.  There's also room for all your favourite sandwiches and rolls.

Expect to see the dishes that have become Sassafras faves plus rare roast beef, parsley polenta mash, whole baked salmon with dates, quinoa or roast pork shoulder with apple.

The list of salads - cucumber, mirin, chilli, ginger, black sesame seeds; potato, green pea, mint; pear, rocket, parmesan salad; spiced carrots, freekeh, baby herbs; brown rice, grilled broccoli, lemon, micro herbs and more also is exciting. They plan four or more choices each day.

Of course it wouldn't be Sassafras without some delightful dessert options and the two I sampled ticked all my boxes.

The revamp has seen a decor update but Sassafras has lost none of its distinctive style that regulars love so well.

Basically it's a new food look for an old favourite cafe, retaining all the charm and flavour.

Recommended for:  Those wanting fast food without a fast food flavour.
Best tip:  Make sure you check out the back courtyard for an outdoor dining experience.
Bottom line:  Lunch prices start at $8.
