A night of luxury with an historic twist

You can't get much more Brisbane than the timber and tin architecture of Spicers Balfour with a view of the Story Bridge, unless you want the heritage art deco elegance of the newer Spicers Balfour suites just down the street.

The newly opened Spicers Balfour Suites are just a couple of houses down the road.  It's almost like visiting the neighbours as you traipse between the two.

Located in a two story heritage building, this addition to Balfour's accommodation offers an authentic slice of Queensland history with modern comforts. A staircase leads up to a roof top bar that's been carved out of the rafters at Balfour to provide a quintessential Brisbane Story Bridge view (pictured above).

Unusually for Brisbane, it was originally designed as apartments or flats as they may have been called then, with four up and down.  It's a solid building, well constructed and renovated with respect to reveal art deco with a modern look.

The bed was definitely king size and one of the most comfortable I've slept in.  It had one of those very thick toppers which you sink into, just a bit, and it feels like a cocoon.  The long feather pillow was a perfect accompaniment.  I want one of each please.

Each suite has a large bathroom with a bath that just begs a good long soak, plus a verandah-style sunroom.  At the rear of the building there's a newly constructed function room which works equally well for business gatherings, weddings, dining or stand-up functions.

Above the room is a roof garden which can be viewed only from room 17.  Remember that when you make a booking.

There's a small honour bar upstairs on the front verandah at Spicers Balfour Suites.  With a view over the street its a getaway place to wind down and relax with a quiet drink.

It's an easy stroll up the street to Balfour Kitchen for breakfast.  The menu has all you breakfast favourites and also offers morning cocktails if you feel up to it.

Ed+bK rating: 4/5 stars - Queensland style from Spicers - the people who do luxury very well.
