Ship Inn, South Bank, Brisbane

Today, with so many restaurants in Brisbane to choose from, it’s all about a point of difference.  That’s why the Ship Inn’s ‘We love ewes’ menu is such a good idea.

In a dining scene where too many big players are offering the world’s best steaks, the Ship Inn at the top end of the South Bank parklands, is bucking the trend and promoting lamb.  It’s also on Aria’s specials menu this month.

The menu has a range of dishes utilising various lamb cuts using premium Corish Farm Lamb, sourced directly from the producer at Mundine, South West of Goondiwindi where the lambs are fed on chic peas.

Expect to find lamb pie, lamb korma, Texan lamb (with a barbeque sauce), parmesan encrusted lamb and lamb shanks - just some of the different specials rotating specials.

Spin Inn owner John Mander-Jones hails from the country and has a five generation association with lamb.

We feasted on char-grilled lamb with a fig, fetta and rocket salad ($24).  The fetta is usually Towri Sheep Cheese Frisky Fetta which was a gold medal winner at the 2009 Brisbane Cheese Awards.  I’ll be a judge at these awards again in June.  Our other choice was an oven roasted lamb rack with potato and parmesan cakes and baby truss tomatoes. ($26)

Dessert was an apple and macadamia spring roll with vanilla bean icecream.

The Ship Inn has a range of dining spaces including an outside dining area overlooking the brilliant arbour of bougainvillea and two indoor dining spaces.

The Ship Inn is open for lunch and dinner from Monday to Sunday and is located at South Bank near the Goodwill Bridge.

Park at South Bank or find street parking.

Bottom line:  Good produce, well prepared and presented and not too tricked up.
