Treacle, Grange

I’m a golden syrup girl but I have been known to expand my repertoire and dip into the dark sticky sweetness of treacle when required.

Treacle tart with Queensland roasted macadamia nut vanilla ice cream caught my eye from my first quick perusal of the menu at Treacle on Days Road at the Grange.  (Yes, you caught me; I was reading the desserts first!)

Treacle is the brain child of executive chefs and owners Richard Gardner and Shenyia Laverack.  Their menu takes advantage of seasonal and local produce offering a modern Australian flavour with a few innovative twists. The wine list features both Australian and New Zealand wines.

There’s also a few references to the ‘old country’ with Yorkshire pud and English black pudding.
Although tempted by the entrees, we decided to stick with mains which proved a sensible choice in the end according to our groaning tummies.

Three went for the 250 gram grain fed Black Angus Eye fillet from Victoria’s Yarra Valley served
with shredded brussel sprouts, pancetta and grain mustard, a Yorkshire pudding and jus ($31.90).  The beef got a thumbs up all round and even the least favourite vegetable, brussel sprouts, tasted just fine.  There was some debate about the Yorkshire pud which, in the opinion of the resident Scot, was a little dry.  Others thought it made the perfect vehicle to mop up juices and any remaining brussel sprout bits.  I’ll leave you to make your own opinion.

The Chain of Ponds Section 400 Pinot Noir 2008 from the Adelaide Hills, chosen in honour of my recent visit to the winery (put it on your ‘great spot to stop for lunch list’) was a nice match to the meat.

Thick cut homemade phat chips with aioli and sea salt ($7) were an unnecessary but delightfully naughty addition.  I forgot to ask what ‘phat’ chips are so if anyone knows please share!

I enjoyed the pot roasted Pittsworth pork belly with honey and thyme roasted parsnips and pears ($29.90). The melt-in-your-mouth pork was nicely set off by the sweetness of the pears and parsnips.  It nearly made up for skipping dessert. (Yes, I skipped dessert she says with a silent wail!)

We finished the meal with coffees.

Bottom line:  A good suburban find.
