Walnut Restaurant, Royal on the Park, Brisbane CBD

Some things make me feel like a small child again - riding a great wave on my boogie board, having my mum tell me it will all be fine and dining at the Walnut Restaurant at Royal on the Park.

Back in the days when Royal on the Park was better known as the Park Royal, the Walnut Restaurant was called the Walnut Room and it was one of 'the' places to dine in Brisbane.  My Dad loved eating out and he often took our family there as a treat when he returned from a business trip.

It's changed, of course, but the bones are still there and the recent refurbishment has given this grand lady a real spring in her step.

I was there to try the August curry menu which includes dishes made to Head Chef Rhian Rodrigues' own family recipes.

Head Chef Rhian Rodrigues and Frederick Marechal Chef A la Carte

Here's what I enjoyed -

Crispy quail with spiced chocolate sprinkle, avocado mousse,  green apple and chilli salad

Seared scallops,  cauliflower brulee, finger lime salsa, micro herb salad

Milly Hill lamb and apricot korma with rice pilaf and cucumber riata

Butter chicken, steamed rice, poppadom

Pear and blueberry clafoutis with vanilla bean ice cream

Caramelised pineapple upside down cake

If you like the look of the Lamb Korma curry,  Royal on the Park is running a competition on their Facebook page. Download the recipe and post a photo of your finished curry on their Facebook page page and the best looking curry will win an overnight accommodation prize. Drawn at the end of August.

The bonus with their two or three course set menus is the inclusion of a glass of wine and free car parking while dining. Free city car parking is a real plus in my book.

Bottom line:  There's a different themed menu each month.
Best tip: Take advantage of the free parking.
