Top 10 breakfasts in Brisbane

Breakfast out, particularly on the weekend, really seems to start the day off well.

Even those non morning people are okay after a good coffee and there's plenty of great conversation happening around town over breakfast.

The other good thing about breakfast is that you know you're not going to be spending much more than $20 a person, including your coffee, unless you are really looking for a coffee hit.

So here's my 10 top places to enjoy breakfast within the Brisbane area - no particular order.  Please share your favourites in the comments section below.

Updated December 2014

 1. It's only six months since Paddington Deli & Epicure opened its doors in the Paddington Antique Centre building on Latrobe Terrace.Deli owner Antoinette Pease has expanded her original offering with the assistance of key new staff including Stu from Stu's Smoked Sauces and a pastry chef. The shop is now a cave of delights with shelves full of high quality produce and cabinets showing food that demands to be eaten. The only problem is what to choose.

My pick: Gluten free zucchini and corn fritters accompanied by avocado salsa.

2. Shouk, Paddington

Shouk's new style of breakfast options have found a ready audience amongst Brisbane's food lovers.  You only need to look at the plate to discover why but the food certainly tastes as good as it looks.

My pick: (top photo) Latke stack with poached egg - crisp Polish pancakes sandwiches with creme fraiches topped with premium ham and surrounded by pretty pickled red onion and dill.

3. Elixir Coffee, Stafford

It's all about the coffee here as the ambience is industrial and busy. But the coffee more than makes up for it and the breakfast menu has good options with both healthly and indulgent choices.

My pick - Breakast burrito - streaky bacon, three friend eggs, cheese, mushrooms, baby spinach and house-made tomato relish.

4. Roastery Cafe, South Brisbane

You know the coffee is going to be good when there's a roastery in the house. The Roastery Cafe has its home in same building as Rouge Coffee Roasters, wrapping itself around the shiny Probat roaster which can be seen from the cafe through a glass window. Of course the cafe's house blend comes from Rouge Coffee.

My pic: Poached eggs with avo, fetta and chilli jam.

5. Sassafrass, Paddington

It’s a bit like sitting down to eat in your crazy aunt’s kitchen, but the food is much better. That’s the feeling I have sitting inside the quirky old Paddington Queenslander with its tongue and grove walls, vintage tables and mismatched chairs.  The old Sunbeam Mixmasters perched high on the bookshelf crammed full of old magazines and books just add to the aura

My pick: Their most popular breakfast order is eggs benedict and I agree.

6. Arthur's Green, Red Hill

The vibe is relaxed and friendly, the food is interesting but familiar, parking is easy and it's child and dog friendly.  Located next to the Red Hill Bowls Club, Arthur's Green ticks all my boxes for a breakfast destination in the suburbs and I'm not alone. On a Sunday morning it was buzzing with families with kids, lots of kids, enjoying a perfect Brisbane morning.

My pick - Eggs benedict with bacon although next time I'm going for the zucchini and mint fritters with haloumi.

7. Annouk, Paddington

Maybe it's because it's a little Frenchy, but this cafe consistently rates highly as a breakfast venue.  Just ask the people standing in the queue.

My pick - French toast with mascarpone and cream

8. Cliffs Cafe, Kangaroo Point

Sometimes it's the view that gets me in and this place has view in spades.

My pick:  Sweet corn fritters with poached free-range eggs, crème fraiche`, baby spinach salad & spicy tomato salsa.

9. Querk Wilston
This is a mix of all sorts but great food and a has friendly, welcoming vibe.

My pick: Smashed avo on sourdough.

10.  Wild Canary

You don't get much more local at a restaurant than produce that is grown in the same Brisbane suburb. Yes, suburb!Avocados grown in Upper Brookfield, which is home to the Brookfield Garden Centre and Wild Canary Bistro, are just some of the local Brisbane delights used here. Chef Glen Barratt likes to work with the few  remaining productive agricultural properties in the Brookfield area which is located on the outskirts of Brisbane.

My pick: Grilled mushrooms with persian fetta and an oversized spoonful of  brassica cous cous, buckwheat and chard, all with a very generous side of bacon.
