To market, to market - New Caledonia's Port Moselle Markets in Noumea

Find it all fresh and fabulously tropical at the sprawling Port Moselle Markets, Baie de la Moselle, Noumea. Shop here, eat like a local and cut your catering costs at the same time. With the array of tropical fruits, crisp baguettes, French cheese and fresh local seafood available, you'll dine like a king with buttery croissants and steaming hot coffee. Most of the market is located under covered pavillions topped with blue tiled roofs. There are butchers and bakers but no candlestick makers but you will fish seafood straight of the boat near the harbor side of the market. Locally grown fruits include papaya, pineapple, bananas and passionfruit and some of the largest avocados I have seen. Would you like a coffee with that owl? Akiba Fukurou Owl Cafe

Take a seat at a Tokyo cafe and the chair next to you might be occupied by a rabbit, snake, goat, cat, dog or even an owl. The chance to get up close and personal with a variety of animals is one of the many attractions of visiting Japan. The weirder the better does it for me, so I headed off to a cafe where there are as many owls as there are people. Akiba Fukurou is a popular spot to visit and visitors line up outside waiting for their hour of owl. Although it's widely known as a cafe and looks like a cafe, the owner of Akiba Fukurou prefers to call it a relaxation space where visitors can interact with the owls and doesn't actually serve food or drink. Once inside, guests take a seat and have the chance to meet the resident owls. There are about 20 owls ranging in size from petite to quite large. Marble masterpiece - Taroko Gorge, Taiwan.

There are no smiles in the photo of the ex-soldiers who carved the road through Taiwan's Taroko Gorge by hand. They sit frozen in long lines and some of the stoic faces belong to the 226 men killed in work related accidents during the construction of the Central Cross Island Highway from Taroko to Dongshi. The gorge's towering marble cliffs and u-shaped valley are made from tough marble and its hard to imagine more back breaking work than chipping it away. But that's what they did under orders of the Japanese who were in control of Taiwan at the time. Taroko Gorge is on the eastern side of Taiwan and easily accessed by a three hour train ride from Taipei snaking alongside the island’s central mountain ridge. Crocolicious - touring and dining at Koorana Crocodile Farm, near Yeppoon.

The water's edge is one of the most dangerous places to relax when you are in crocodile country. That's the message that came through loud and clear as I toured Koorana Crocodile Farm in Coowonga, between the city of Rockhampton and the coastal centre of Yeppoon. Established as a the first commercial crocodile farm in Queensland in 1981 by John and Lillian Lever, the farm has grown into a family business with son Adam conducting the daily tours and a restaurant offering crocodile steaks, pies and more for lunch. It's no surprise the dry dirt track that meandered through some pretty desolate country to the farm gate was callled Savages Road. What was surprising was the affection between tour guide Adam and the crocodiles. Adam talked about the crocs as if they were old friends. How to make broccolini taste so good you'll lick the plate!

I've always liked broccolini but when a whole cool box full of the stuff arrived, I was wondering how I would get through it. So I asked my Facebook friends how they like to eat this vegetable. Sasha said - Throw into a pasta (preferably Casarecce) with pancetta, chilli, shallots/onion, white wine, salt and pepper. Jay likes it - With poached eggs and hollandaise Simone said - Make a pesto with it - delish, mix thru pasta or put on top of bruschetta. Try tempura with a delish miso / soy/ garlicky dressing! Another way is a simple salad side dish, blanched quickly with a dressing, parmesan and pine nuts. Karis suggested - Roasted with olive oil and almonds and I'll second the parmesan and pine nuts option. Theresa likes - Pasta with chorizo, roasted capsicum and broccolini.
