A Brisbane market Christmas

If you'd rather buy your veggies straight from the source or just purchase something different than you see on the shelves at the big chain stores Jan Power’s Farmers Markets will have lots to interest you, especially for Christmas.

The marketeers at Mitchelton, New Farm, Queen Street Mall and Manly are gearing up for their best Christmas ever.

“This year market shoppers seem to be going for a simpler, old fashioned festive season,” said Jan. “The emphasis is on a few high quality products presented beautifully rather than a big over the top feast.”

Top Sellers
Pudding Lane
Handmade traditional Christmas puddings with currants, sultanas, figs, macadamias, and soaked in brandy and Guinness. They just won a ‘Good Egg’ award from the RSPCA for their kindness to chickens!

Kandara Berry Farms
Plump, shiny, red cherries are the essence of Christmas. They team perfectly with blueberries and raspberries to make a festive summer pudding which provides a light alternative to plum puddings.

Princess Charlotte Seafoods
Synonymous with Christmas are Moreton Bay tiger prawns. This year it’s all about the old 70’s prawn cocktail with shredded iceberg lettuce and Marie Rose sauce.

Gympie Farm Cheese
Gympie Farm Cheese has been widely awarded for their goats cheese including the Brisbane Cheese Awards and the Vogue Produce Awards. A must for the simple goats cheese and crouton salad from Provence. Perfect to accompany a roast chook! Also just serve running off the plate with crackers.

Us 2 You
Mangoes can be eaten over the bath in the trad way, but for the Gen Y-ers its mango daiquiris all the way. “The good old Women’s Weekly salad with avocado, prawns, and pecans cannot be beaten,” said Jan. “A whole new generation has discovered it.”

Chriberg Suckling Pig Ham

Triple smoked over imported German wood chips, smaller than standard and melt in the mouth. Perfect for tiny ham sandwich points and to go with the Boxing Day scrambled eggs.

Dello Mano Brownies
The awaited Christmas Pudding Brownie ( personal fave) is back, fruit soaked in brandy in all its Belgian chocolatey glory. New flavours which have launched in the past few months and have been extremely popular include: Kingaroy Peanut Butter and Dark Chocolate, Coconut and Lime Chocolate Brownie and Ginger and Orange Chocolate Brownie.

The Queen Street Mall market on December 22nd will include all the Christmas cheer including a red thonged (footwear not underwear!) Santa in red board shorts.
