Hidden under a large shopping centre, you would be unlikely to find this fish lovers gem unless you are a Paddo local.
Find Paddington Central on Latrobe Terrace by it's red peaked gables but head downstairs to find Il Posto near the car park entrance.
It's run and owned by Glen Haffenden and Tony D’Alessandro. They also operate the Italian restaurant on the upper floor of the centre. Tony and Glen have family ties to ecco da nicolini, D.O.C. Pizza & Mozzarella bar and +39 Pizzeria & Degustation in Melbourne.
The Fish Cafe fare is simple with some interesting specials thrown in to keep locals coming back. The display cabinet is filled with good looking local fish and Glen says all their fresh seafood is sourced locally, which is great news. I'm not keen on eating imported Basa.
I did see Orange Roughy on their menu board which is outside my sustainable fish eating guidelines. You can check which fish are best to eat from this point of view at Australia's Sustainable Seafood Guide. There's even a handy app you can download for dining out.
We ordered a Seafood Box for two which included herb crumbed whiting, prawn cutlets, calamari, white bait fritters, oysters, chips, salads and sauces. It was extremely well priced at $34.50. It came with a two oysters but they were so small I would have preferred a bit more calamari instead. It was good value for the price but I would stick to their fish fillets which I've also tried and enjoyed.
The specials menu looks very tempting and would make a great dinner option when you don't feel like simple fish and chips.
The dining is very casual and it's not a place where you would probably linger over a bottle of wine, but it's very handy for a quick meal.
Il Posto opens at 8.30 and offers a breakfast selection and espresso bar. There's also pizza and a wagyu burger on offer.
A big bonus for this cafe is the endless amount of parking available on site.
Bottom line: Good fish and chips with handy parking
Best tip: Check the specials board before you order
