Junk Bar, Ashgrove

It's one of those places that you'd never discover just on your own unless you are lucky because it certainly doesn't shout 'Come here for a good time' on the outside.

But between the formal dress shop and the Chinese takeaway, step behind the yellow curtain and discover a whole different world waiting at Junk Bar on Waterworks Road and Ashgrove Avenue at Ashgrove.

Expect to find deer heads, stuffed cobras ready to strike, woodland wall scenes and cosy velvet couches.  It's sort of back woods meets funky retro mama. Your granny would be familiar with the decor and she might even like the early evening music.

With the closure of an adjacent store, Junk Bar has expanded with a 'private' room which begs to be filled with happy patrons. It's an ideal venue for birthday drinks (that's a hint to my family), just like hosting a 70s house party.

Bottom line: cocktails cost around $15
Best tip: first Saturday of the month Junk Bar turns into an Aladdin’s Cave of Treasures with vintage prints, lamps, clothing, jewellery, hi-fi and hundreds of records from 10am.
