Woking Wongabel

Renata Roberts of Sichuan Bang Bang is “Taking it to the Streets” every Tuesday night from 5pm with a street barbeque and dumpling night in Wongabel Street, Kenmore outside the restaurant.

Black fungus chive, wombok and carrot jiaozii dumplings.

Bang Bang’s own Aunty Wang rolls out five different flavours of jiaozii dumplings and steams them while their master Shao Kao cook on whips up wonderful Chinese street food skewers on the barbecue. Flavours include snapper and shallot, pork xiaolong boa, chicken and celery, and beef and leek. Most Tuesdays there’s also live acoustic music.

Bang Bang is now licensed with a short and sweet drinks menu designed by the one and only Peter Marchant.

New pub grub at the Normanby

The Normanby Hotel has turned into a gastropub with a new menu from recently appointed Head Chef Doug Purton.

Think house-made duck and shiitake mushroom wontons with wasabi mayo, glass noodle and cucumber salad drizzle with nam jim dressing; scallop and prawn risotto with Mooloolaba prawns and Fraser Coast scallops in creamy seafood bisque risotto.

Spanish fiesta dinner

Now here’s a pairing not to be missed - Alejandro Cancino and Pablo Tordesillas will team up to host a dinner on May 27 - a Spanish fiesta of tapas and sharing plates at Urbane.

Alejandro, Executive Chef and co-owner of Urbane, The Euro and The Laneway has proven himself as an elite Argentinian chef, with a dazzling CV and a view to show us an exciting vegan and sustainable future! Pablo, ex Ortiga, possesses an understanding and passion for all that is Spanish and backs his love of traditional Spanish cuisine with techniques learned training in some world renowned restaurants. The cost will be $85 per person.

New 5 star hotel for Brisbane

Caxton Street has gone five star with the opening of the Gambaro Hotel, the first Brisbane luxury hotel to open since 2007.

Features include balconies for 49 of the 68 rooms, views over the hills of Paddington, a Sunset Lounge terrace with 180 degree views on the third floor, and nine different room types.

In addition to the established seafood restaurant and MG Bar, the Black Hide Steakhouse  s is the only restaurant in Queensland to provide an exclusive selection of world-class steak cuts from esteemed beef breeder and producer Stanbroke Beef.

Breakfast now on the menu at Il Locale

Mark Tognini has moved outside the breakfast square with a new menu at Il Locale. Expect pan fried sardines with confit cherry tomatoes, green chilli & lime aioli with soft poached eggs; a twist on the traditional green eggs & ham – scrambled eggs with crushed peas, grilled leg ham and salted ricotta on toast (top photo); and for sweet tooths - woodfired granola with yoghurt panna cotta and strawberry coulis.

Become a master of malt

Whiskey or whisky?
Single malt or a blend?

If these questions keep you awake at night you’ll find the answers and perhaps a better night’s sleep for more reasons than one at the Pig ‘N’ Whistle’s special Whisky Appreciation Dinner on Thursday June 12, at 6.30pm.

Pig ‘N’ Whistle Indooroopilly has partnered with leading distilleries, Glenmorangie and Ardbeg, to showcase a number of world-renowned whiskies so guests can learn more about the drop.  The dinner will feature eight tastings matched with a delicious degustation menu designed by executive chef Deniz Coskun to enhance the taste of the single malt whiskies. Tickets $99 per person.

Going nuts

This week I’m tasting - Blue Diamond snack nuts.

Packaged in practical and convenient, re-sealable tins that maintain the freshness these flavoured almonds are way too morish. The initial three varieties are Wasabi and Soy – with a unique and bold flavour kick, Honey Roasted – perfect for the sweeter appetite and Roasted Salted – the delicious crowd pleaser.

Find them in the snack aisle in Woolworths with RRP from $4.90.
